Puppy potty log: a simple chart and habit
A puppy potty log records each pee and poop with the time and place, plus accidents. After a few days you can see your own pattern and plan trips outside. The log is a record. Your vet or trainer helps with what the pattern means.

What is a puppy potty log?
It is a list of times when your puppy went to the bathroom, with a few details. The detail you need is small: time, pee or poop, outside or inside. Over a few days the list shows a rhythm that is hard to see from memory.
Owners use it in the first weeks to plan breaks and to see whether the plan works. A shared log keeps a family on the same page.
Wikipedia describes housetraining as a general idea, but your puppy's rhythm is the one that matters, and a log shows it.
What should I record?
Keep entries short. The table lists what most owners find useful. Add more only if you will keep it up.
| Field | Why |
|---|---|
| Time | Shows the rhythm |
| Pee, poop or both | Distinguishes the events |
| Outside or accident | Shows whether the plan works |
| Consistency, if you wish | Gives your vet a record |
| Note | Right after eating, after play, after waking |
How do I log quickly?
Log as you stand outside, not later. A one-tap button beats a notebook with a pen that has run out. Okaypup's Today tab has a Potty button that saves the time, and a long press lets you set pee, poop or both, outside or accident, and consistency from 1 to 5.
The Health tab keeps a fuller potty history. Entries are your own record. Okaypup does not judge them.
Our care log page explains how the quick row works.
How do I read the pattern?
After three or four days, look at the times. Do the events cluster after meals, after naps or after play? Do accidents happen at a certain hour? You are looking for your puppy's pattern, not for a perfect schedule.
Share what you see with your trainer or vet. They can suggest a plan based on the puppy's age and health. Okaypup does not interpret the log, so the reading is yours.
Do not scold a puppy for what the log shows. Use it to plan better trips outside.
Who should log, and how do I avoid doubles?
One person logs each event as it happens. If two people share care, check the log before you take the puppy out. In Okaypup the alert for duplicate entries appears when the same kind of event is logged twice in a short window.
The By field shows who logged each entry. In version 1 it is a local label on one phone. Pick one phone for logging during the first weeks.
A sticky note by the door with 'Log it' is a low-tech version of the same trick.
What should I show my vet or trainer?
Show the last few days, not everything. The visit summary in Okaypup includes potty breaks and accidents logged in the last 72 hours, with the latest entry. It is a prompt for conversation, not a diagnosis.
If your puppy's pattern changes suddenly, or you are worried, contact your veterinarian. A dated log makes the call faster and more precise.
Our new puppy paperwork checklist lists the other records to keep.
Does the log replace training?
No. A log shows what happens. Training changes what happens. A qualified trainer or your vet can help with a plan, and the log helps them see where you are starting from.
Treat the log as a way to notice progress. Seeing accidents fall over a few weeks is encouraging, and it is something to show your family.
Do not compare your puppy with someone else's. Puppies differ.
When can I stop logging?
Stop when the pattern is stable and you no longer need the notes. Many owners log for a few weeks and then keep only the quick tap. Others stop entirely and restart when something changes.
History stays readable in the app, so you can look back whenever you wish.
If you keep going, the potty entries also contribute to the streak that earns Pup Card milestones.
How do accidents fit into the log?
Log them as accidents, with the time and place, using the same neutral tone as any other entry. An accident is data. It tells you which hour or which room needs a plan. It says nothing about your puppy's character or your skills as an owner.
Okaypup's potty entry lets you mark outside or accident, so the feed shows both in one list. You can filter the feed by potty and see only those entries.
Clean-up and training advice come from your trainer or vet. The log shows what happened.
What if I have more than one dog?
Keep a separate log for each dog, since patterns differ. In Okaypup you add each dog in Me > Dogs and switch with the avatar at the top of each tab. The free plan holds one dog, and Plus lifts that limit.
If two puppies go out together, log each one as it happens. It takes a few extra taps, and it avoids guessing later which puppy went.
A puppy's log and an adult dog's log can look very different, and that is fine.
What mistakes do owners make with a potty log?
The common ones are logging from memory at the end of the day, which makes the times unreliable, and logging too many details, which makes the habit collapse by the weekend. Keep entries to the essentials and log while you are standing in the yard.
Another mistake is reading too much into one day. A single day is noise, and a week shows a pattern. Look at several days together before you change the plan.
If you feel unsure, show the log to your vet or trainer. They can tell you what to watch.
A starter routine for the first week
These steps are about the log, not about training.
- Pick one place for the log and tell everyone.
- Log every pee and poop for seven days.
- Note whether it was outside or an accident.
- Look for clusters on day four.
- Bring the last three days to the next vet visit.
