Dog care log: what to track each day, and what to skip
A dog care log is a running record of meals, walks, potty breaks and medication, plus occasional weight and notes. Track only what you would want to know later: when, how much and who did it. The best log is the one you actually fill in.

What should a dog care log include?
Start with four events: meals, walks, potty breaks and medication. They answer the questions that come up at home, such as whether the dog has eaten or whether someone gave the pill.
Add weight now and then, vet visits with cost, and a short note when something is out of the ordinary.
| Entry | Worth recording | Skip unless useful |
|---|---|---|
| Meal | Time, rough amount | Exact grams if you free-feed |
| Walk | Time, length | Route details |
| Potty | Time | Every sniff |
| Medication | Time, which one | Dose math from memory |
| Weight | Date and number | Daily weighing |
| Note | What you saw, when | Guesses at causes |
How detailed should I be?
Less than you think. A log that takes thirty seconds a day survives. A log that needs a spreadsheet dies in a week. One tap per event with the time attached is enough for most households.
Why keep a log at all?
Three reasons. In a shared home it settles who did what. Over weeks it shows your dog's rhythm, which makes a change easier to spot for you. And at the vet it replaces memory with dates.
The log records. It does not judge. Reading a pattern as a problem is a job for your veterinarian.
How does Okaypup make it quick?
The Today tab has Fed, Walk, Meds and Potty as one-tap buttons. A longer press adds time, amount and a note. If you log the same kind of event twice in a short window, an alert checks first. See the care log.
Everything stays on your iPhone and exports to JSON or CSV.
- Open Today.
- Tap the event as it happens.
- Long-press only when you need to change the time or add a note.
- Glance at the feed before you give the next meal or dose.
How do I keep the habit going?
Tie logging to something you already do. Log the meal while the bowl is down. Log the walk at the door. Reminders help for fixed items, so set them in Okaypup reminders and mark Done from the notification.
Do not catch up in bulk at night. A late entry with a guessed time is worse than no entry.
What should I keep for the long term?
Weight history, vaccine and treatment dates, vet visits and costs are worth keeping for years. Daily meal entries are mostly useful for the last few days. Export the whole log once in a while if you want a backup.
Should I log weight, and how often?
Weight is one number that is easy to record and useful over time. Many owners log it at vet visits, and some weigh monthly on a home scale by weighing themselves with and without the dog. Pick one method and keep it, since changing the method makes the numbers hard to compare.
Okaypup stores the weights you enter and shows the current value on the free plan. Plus keeps the full history. The app does not say whether a number is good or bad.
What about good days and notes?
Okaypup has a good days tracker, where you mark how a day went in your own judgment. Over a month, it gives you a simple picture of how things have been. It is your view, not a measurement.
Use notes for facts: a new food on a certain date, a long hike, a changed schedule. When you look back, those facts explain the rest of the log.
How do I share the job in a household?
Decide where the log lives and who owns the habit. If several people log, agree on the quick row as the single way to record meals so the feed stays accurate. Entries carry a By label that defaults to the owner name.
Version 1 of Okaypup is local to one phone. Shared packs, where several people log into the same dog profile, are designed for a later version and are not part of the first release.
Paper log or app?
A paper chart on the fridge works if everyone writes on it. An app wins when you want history, reminders, export and a summary for the vet. Many people use both for a while. Whatever you pick, the rule is the same: write it down when it happens.
If you start on paper, copy the main numbers into the app now and then so the long-term record is in one place.
What does a week of entries look like?
On a typical day you may log two or three meals, three walks, a few potty breaks and one medication. That is under a dozen taps. On a quiet day you may log less. The point is not to fill every slot but to record what happened when it happens.
Once you have a week of entries, you can glance at the feed and see your dog's rhythm without counting in your head.
What if I forget to log something?
Add it later with the time you remember and a note that it is approximate, or skip it. Do not reconstruct a whole day from memory. A log with gaps is still more useful than no log, and the gaps are honest.
How do I log a walk or a potty break so the entry is useful?
Keep each entry to facts you can state without guessing. A walk entry in Okaypup can hold a duration and a yes or no for whether your dog pulled or reacted. A potty entry can hold the type (pee, poop or both), where it happened (outside or an accident) and a consistency number from 1 firm to 5 loose.
Those numbers are your own observations. The app stores them and does not say what any value means. If a pattern worries you, show the entries to your veterinarian.
What does a puppy log look like?
With a young puppy the potty log does most of the work. Log every break, mark whether it was outside or an accident, and after a few days the Potty pattern screen shows the last 14 days. It also estimates the likely next break, which is simply your last break plus your average gap between breaks.
Okaypup compares accidents this week with last week, and the screen includes a line that hard weeks are common with a new puppy. Look at the trend, not the day.
How do I find an old entry?
The log feed has filters for All, Food, Walks, Meds, Potty and Notes, plus a search box. That helps when a sitter asks when the last dose went in, or when you want to see every note you wrote about a new food. Tap an entry to open it. You can delete one, after a confirmation, and a deleted entry cannot be brought back.
What if I want a paper version?
A simple chart works if you keep the columns tight. Print one sheet per week and tape it where the bowl lives.
- Date and time
- Event: meal, walk, potty, medication or note
- Amount or length, only when it matters
- Who did it
- One line of notes
A quick way to start this week
Do not set up everything on day one. Log meals for three days, add walks on day four and medication when the first dose comes up. Once the first three feel automatic, add weight at the next vet visit. A log built in layers is easier to keep than one that asks for everything at once.
When the log is not enough
A log cannot tell you whether something is wrong. If you are worried about your dog, contact a veterinarian, and bring a visit summary so the facts are on one page.
Frequently asked questions
What should I write in a dog care log?
Meals, walks, potty breaks and medication with times, plus occasional weight, vet visits and short notes.
How long should I keep a dog care log?
Keep weights, treatment dates and vet visits for the long term. Daily entries matter most for recent days and the next appointment.
Is there a free dog care log app?
Okaypup's care log is free, stays on your iPhone and exports to JSON or CSV.
Can the log tell me if my dog is sick?
No. It records what you enter. If you are worried, contact a veterinarian.
Can I search my dog's care log?
In Okaypup you can filter the feed by food, walks, meds, potty and notes, and search it by text.
How do I log potty breaks for a puppy?
Tap Potty on the Today tab each time, then open the entry if you want to mark outside or an accident. Several days of entries feed the Potty pattern view.
