Dog walking schedule template: plan, share and log

Updated · 4 min read

A dog walking schedule is a weekly grid showing who walks the dog and when, with a note field for route, length and anything unusual. Fill in the fixed walks first, assign each slot to a person, and log what happened so the next walker knows.

What should a dog walking schedule include?

List the days of the week across the top and the walk slots down the side: morning, midday, evening. In each cell write who is responsible. Add a small column for notes, such as route, leash, treats or anything that happened.

The aim is that no one wonders whether the dog was walked. A schedule that answers that question in five seconds saves arguments and missed walks.

If a professional walker is involved, share the grid with them as well and ask them to confirm the slots in writing.

A weekly template you can copy

Start with a grid like the one below and adapt it. Replace the names and slots with your own household.

Mark the walks that cannot move, such as the one before work, and the ones that can. Flexible slots make the schedule easier to follow.

How do I decide who walks when?

Split by availability, not by fairness slogans. The person who works from home takes midday. The person with the long commute takes the evening. Rotate the weekend. A schedule that matches real constraints survives longer than one that looks equal.

Agree on a swap rule: if you cannot walk, you tell the other person by a set time, not at the last minute. Put the rule on the sheet.

If children help, assign them a task that matches their age and supervise it.

How long and how far should walks be?

That depends on your dog's age, size, health and energy, and your veterinarian or trainer is the right person to ask. A schedule records what you do. It does not set a target for you. Write down any advice they give with the date.

Be careful with numbers copied from the internet. A guide that suits one breed can be wrong for another.

Wikipedia's article on dog walking describes the variety of practice and the rules that vary by place, such as leash laws.

How should I hand off a walk?

A handoff needs three facts: when the last walk ended, whether the dog went potty and anything unusual, such as pulling toward a particular house. A text or a log entry covers all three.

In Okaypup the Walk button on Today records the time, and a long press adds duration and notes such as whether the dog pulled or reacted. The By field shows who walked. The alert for duplicate entries helps when two people head out at once.

Our care log page explains the quick row in detail.

How do I keep a walk log?

A log is the schedule's memory. It shows whether the planned walks happened and when. The Health tab in Okaypup has a walk log with fuller history, and walks count toward milestones such as 100 walks on the Pup Card.

You do not need to log every detail. A time and a few words are enough for most days.

Review the log once a week and adjust the schedule if the same slot keeps failing.

What if a professional walker takes my dog?

Send the walker a short sheet with contacts, leash and harness details, the route you prefer and the things to avoid. Ask them to send a photo or a line after each walk and to note anything unusual.

Share the vaccine record only if they ask for it. Our guide to dog sitter instructions lists the sections worth including.

Check that the walker has your emergency contact and your vet's number, and that they know when to call you.

How do I share the schedule with the household?

Pick one place for the schedule and stick to it. A shared note, a fridge sheet or a message pinned in a family chat all work. The wrong answer is three different versions.

In version 1, Okaypup keeps data on one iPhone, so a second phone has its own log. You can share a PDF of the routine through the share sheet, but the two phones do not sync. If two people share care, use one phone for logging or agree who updates it.

Decide this early so it does not become a surprise.

What do I do when the weather is bad?

Decide your rainy-day and hot-day versions in advance. A shorter walk, a different time or an indoor game can all fit, and your veterinarian or trainer can advise what is safe for your dog in extreme heat or cold. Write the agreed version on the schedule so nobody argues at the door.

Keep a towel, an extra leash and a light near the door, and note where they are. A schedule that includes the practical items gets followed more often.

If you walk in the dark, add a note about lights and reflective gear for the walker.

How do I keep a walker or neighbor reliable?

Reliability comes from clarity. Give the person the exact slots, the way to reach you and a backup if they cannot come. Ask for a short confirmation each week. If something goes wrong, you want to know the same day and not on Friday.

Thank them. People who help with dogs do it because they like it, and a small gesture goes a long way toward keeping the arrangement going.

Keep a spare key plan in writing and share it only with people you trust.

When should I change the schedule?

Change it when something real changes: a new job, a new season, a new puppy, an older dog. Revise the grid and date it. Delete old versions.

If your dog's behavior on walks changes suddenly, mention it to your vet or a trainer and bring your log to the appointment.

Treat the first weeks after any change as a trial.
