Dog feeding chart and log: track meals without guessing
A dog feeding log records each meal with the time, the food, the portion and who gave it. It prevents double dinners, helps sitters follow the routine and gives your vet a clear record. It does not decide how much your dog should eat. Your vet and the food label do that.

What is a dog feeding chart or log?
A feeding chart lists meals for each day, and a log records what actually happened. The two work together. The chart says breakfast at 7 and dinner at 6, and the log says breakfast was at 7:15 and Sam gave it.
Households use logs to avoid feeding twice, to hand over care and to see patterns. A log is a record and not a diet plan.
Many searches for a feeding chart ask for amounts by weight and age. Those numbers belong to your veterinarian and the food's packaging, not to a generic table.
What should one entry contain?
Keep it light so you actually fill it in. Time, food, portion and the name of the person who fed are enough for most days. Add a note when something is out of the ordinary.
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Time | 7:15 a.m. |
| Food | Dry food, the brand and flavor you buy |
| Portion | One scoop, with the scoop size noted once |
| By | Who gave the meal |
| Note | Left half, new bowl, eats slowly |
Where do I get the portion size?
From your veterinarian or the instructions on the food package, adjusted by the vet for your dog. Write the number on the first page of your log and note who gave it to you. If your vet changes the portion, update it and add the date.
Do not adjust portions because of a chart you found online. Dogs differ in size, age, activity and health.
If you are unsure, ask at your next visit and bring the log.
How do I stop double feeding?
Log each meal right after it is served. If you share care, check the log before you feed. A paper chart by the bowl works if everyone ticks it.
Okaypup shows an alert when the same kind of event is logged twice in a short window, so a second person sees that breakfast was already given before it happens again. The By field shows who logged it.
In version 1 the By field is a local label on one phone. If two phones are involved, agree on one place to log.
How can I log treats and extras?
Treats count in a dog's day, and some owners track them. Add a short note or use a separate line. You do not need to log every biscuit. Log the ones that matter, such as a chew given during a long trip.
If your vet asks you to track everything your dog eats for a while, a feeding log with notes does that job.
Photos help. Okaypup lets you attach a photo to a note.
How do I use the log at the vet?
Show the last few days of meals. The clinic does not need a month of detail. The visit summary in Okaypup lists meals logged in the last 72 hours with their times, which is long enough to cover a weekend.
Bring questions as well. Whether a portion is right is a question for your vet. The visit summary has a space for up to five questions.
Our guide to what to bring to a vet appointment covers the rest.
What about a change of food?
Record the date and the new food in the log so you can compare later. If you changed food gradually, note the steps. Your vet can tell you how to do it for your dog.
Keep the old bag or a photo of the label. When a vet asks what your dog eats, a photo answers faster than memory.
Use the notes field to write what you observed in neutral words, such as 'finished the bowl' or 'left half'.
Should I use paper, a spreadsheet or an app?
Use whatever you will open every day. Paper works well when the bowl is in the kitchen. A spreadsheet suits people who like data. An app suits people who want times saved automatically and search.
The care log in Okaypup has Fed as a one-tap button, with the time saved. A long press adds a portion, a food name and a note. You can filter the feed by food and search it by text.
Whatever you pick, put the first entry in today.
How does a feeding log help when I travel?
A sitter or boarding facility can follow your routine only if it is written. A feeding log with a week of real entries shows them what a normal day looks like, down to the times. Share a short version, such as the last three days and the standing portion, and keep the full log to yourself.
After the trip, ask for the same details back and add them to the log. Gaps in the record are normal. Just note the dates when you were away and who looked after the dog.
Our dog boarding checklist covers what else to hand over.
What are common mistakes with feeding logs?
The most common is making the log too detailed. If you have to type six fields, you will stop by Thursday. Another is logging after the fact, from memory, so the times are guesses. A third is using the log to second-guess other people. It is a shared record, so keep the tone neutral.
A good log answers two questions in a few seconds: has the dog eaten, and who fed. Everything else is optional.
If a field never gets filled in, remove it.
Can I use the log for more than one dog?
Yes, but keep each dog's entries separate. Dogs eat differently, and a combined list becomes confusing. Okaypup lets you add each dog in Me > Dogs and switch with the avatar at the top of each tab. The free plan holds one dog and Plus lifts that limit.
On paper, use one column or one sheet per dog and write the dog's name at the top.
If dogs eat side by side, log each bowl as it is served.
A one-week test
Run the log for a week. Then decide what to keep.
- Log every meal for seven days
- Note who fed and when
- Write down questions for your vet
- Check which fields you actually used
- Drop the fields you never filled in

Can I attach a photo to a feeding note?
Yes. Okaypup notes can include an optional photo.
Can I show my dog's meals to the vet?
Yes. The visit summary lists the last 72 hours of logged meals, and you can show it on screen.
